Welcome
to our Educational Page:
Dyslexia
is a word that has become a bit of an "educational buzz word" of
recent.
No single definition currently exists
to adequately define Dyslexia, including my own definition. The truth is,
at present nobody really knows exactly what Dyslexia is or what causes it.
However, I do know much about the Dyslexic condition (I have been
independently tested and have a very mild form myself) and as a consequence
Dyslexia tends to be described in terms of its symptoms or alternatively in
terms of what it is not. For example 'Dyslexia is not due to low
intelligence' or 'Dyslexia is not a disease, it has no cure'. And it should
not be a barrier to learning.
In your search for information you may have discovered many definitions and
proposed causes of Dyslexia. Many professionals will put forward their own
views and theories, which will generally differ from the views and theories
of others. Understandably, this is often confusing.
However, if you find yourself in this
position and are wondering how on earth you can begin to understand a
condition that has no single definition, do not despair. Those who work
with dyslexic children and adults on a day-to-day basis quickly learn to
recognise the signs of dyslexia and although no two Dyslexics are the same,
all Dyslexics share enough common symptoms to make recognising the
condition possible. Unlike some, I do not wish to attempt to impose any one
single definition upon anyone.
There are
many organisations that offer to help people with Dyslexia of which, in the
UK, The DYSLEXIA ACTION is (A national charity and the UK's leading
provider of services and support for people with dyslexia and literacy
difficulties) they are extremely helpful and can be found at http://www.dyslexiaaction.org.uk/
We do not
subscribe to any one organisation, as there are many, all of whom do a
great job. We also do not offer any free on-line testing, but we do offer
good advise, we can point you in the right direction via a referral and we
can offer real time help with your equation.
If you
need a Dyslexic test done, and you find that your local school, college or
work place can not help you or help you at an affordable cost, then we
offer a service (takes about 3 hours) whereby you can have a full test done
and be given a comprehensive report with practical options, that will give
you ability to choose what to do next. It doesn't matter what your age or
gender, if you feel that either yourself, a child or a friend could benefit
from our help, then please get in contact with us.
We offer a
range of services from a full diagnostics test - literacy coaching on a one
to one basis. This is not a service to help people for whom English is not
there first language (unless they have a good command of this language to
start with), to learn how to speak English. If you need to learn how to
speak English we can re-direct you to educational establishments that offer
such a service.
